Great Rivers Greenway Taps Community to Help Drive Chouteau Greenway Design

Our team is thrilled to announce a new community outreach effort in partnership with Great Rivers Greenway to help inform one of our region’s most exciting projects - and one that will connect the city from Washington University and Forest Park to Downtown and the Gateway Archs. Great Rivers Greenway is leading a major public-private partnership to establish the conceptual plan for the Chouteau Greenway – a new project to connect the areas of Washington University and Forest Park east to Downtown and the Gateway Arch – through an international design competition. The competition, led by architect Donald J. Stastny, FAIA, who managed the design competition for the CityArchRiver project, will kick off with the release of a Request for Qualifications in September.

The Chouteau Greenway, plus connections to the north and south, will be part of the overall network of greenways being built by Great Rivers Greenway and partners. The greenway will connect area neighborhoods, employment centers, parks, transit and dozens of cultural and educational institutions. The competition invites designers to think beyond the trail itself to create active, vibrant spaces and destinations along the way. The goal is to have the greenway be a dynamic and unique St. Louis experience, similar to the High Line in New York City or the Atlanta Beltline.

Great Rivers Greenway is currently recruiting volunteer and paid team members to join the Chouteau Greenway Outreach Team. The Outreach Team intends to engage residents, employees, and visitors within and around the project footprint and across the region in an effort to identify stories, behaviors, needs, wants, and opportunities that will drive planning and design. Residents of the region are also encouraged to apply for the Citizen Advisory Committee. Citizen Advisory Committee applications are being accepted now through September 8 online at www.GreatRiversGreenway.org/Chouteau.

Initial recruitment for the Outreach Team launched Tuesday, August 15, and will continue through Friday, September 1, with interviews, orientation, and training to follow.  To apply, interested individuals should email a resume and cover letter to Lindsay Pattan at Lindsay@LindsayPattan.com with the subject line “Chouteau Greenway Outreach Team Application.” Recruitment may continue on an as-needed basis through mid-November, but those interested are encouraged to apply by Wednesday, August 23. **INITIAL APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED: Applications are now due by September 8, 2017. **

Job Qualifications
Passionate about improving quality of life for residents of St. Louis
Strong verbal communications skills, comfortable talking to strangers with enthusiasm
Ability to motivate people to complete a survey to improve their neighborhoods
Ability to field difficult questions graciously, with discretion
Ability to stand and/or walk for up to one to five hours at a time
Ability to lift and/or carry up to five to 20 lbs. of materials and supplies a plus, but not necessary
Prior canvassing, community outreach, and/or organizing experience, but not necessary
Multi-lingual a plus, but not necessary

Job Responsibilities
Attend ongoing training sessions

Develop a strong understanding of the Chouteau Greenway project, including its goals, footprint, major partners, community engagement efforts, and timeline

Represent the Chouteau Greenway project at various community events and pop-ups including, but not limited to, neighborhood meetings, grocery stores, Metrolink stations, coffee shops, university campuses, employment centers, and religious institutions

Track and report on outreach goals including, but not limited to, number of homes or individuals reached, and surveys completed

Participate in potential canvassing shifts

Compensation: $15.00/hour at 5-15 hours/week (hours will vary by week)
